Gender Roles
Growing up in a traditional Indian household, I experienced many gender role differences. Gender roles refer to "the socially constructed roles, behaviours, activities, and attributes that a given society considers appropriate for men and women" (http://www.who.int). In my Social and Cultural Context of Education class we looked at various topics such as privilege, diversity and cultural capital, language and social capital, social class, gender and sexism, colonial legacies and cultural capital, ablesim, sexual orientation, immigration and belonging youth culture, globalization and the hegemony of English and Anglo culture, and bullying/safe schools. The class focused on criticizing our own teaching practice and its context as well as exploring our personal experiences. This course was crucial for my learning during my M.Ed because it gave me a different perspective on education as well as the problems and dilemmas faced by some students. During the course, we reflected on our experiences through discussions both in class and online through a class website. The course made me aware of the fact that no matter where one comes from, what their background is, or their status in society, everyone faces some sort of challenge (some more than others).
Artifact
This artifact is a personal reflection that I wrote based on gender role differences that I experienced while growing up. It highlights the various roles and responsibilities that I had verses my brother. The paper takes a critical stance on my personal memories and experiences and is analyzed through the gender roles and expectations in my family of origin and how it shaped my educational choices and experiences with respect to overall academic achievement, subject specific achievement, work habits, recreational time, household chores and career goals and educational trajectories. I chose to include this artifact because it is my most personal reflection where I wrote about my personal feelings and experiences without caring about what others would think. This artifact has been a great opportunity for me to reflect and come out of my comfort zone because I do not usually openly talk about myself or my personal life. In addition, completing this lived experience paper as given me insight on the various problems that students may come into the classroom with.
